I was in the middle of a morning run at the weekend when this track came on my random-tune generator (I don't know how it works but I'd like to meet and thank whoever it is that chooses my music because it's too hard for me to do it myself)...Express Yourself by Charles Wright & The Watts 103rd Street Rythm Band (I know, me neither). Reader, let me tell you, it put quite a kick in my step. I did a few wiggly bum long strides. I may even have done a little star jump. And even though I was running with about 350 other people I DID NOT CARE what I looked like.
The song's lyrics include the slightly mind-bending:
It’s not what you look like, when you’re doin´ what you’re doin´. It’s what you’re doin´ when you’re doin´ what you look like you’re doin´!
What a great thought to hold onto. We're all guilty of sometimes doing what we feel we should rather than doing what's right for ourselves. Do it for too long, or stretch too far away from your inner values and the strain becomes palpable. After enough time it becomes almost impossible to remember what it was about yourself you were trying to mask in the first place, in order to 'fit in' or 'get on'.
How about you spot an opportunity today to stop doing something that isn't right for you and instead express yourself?
Maybe this guy should stop trying so hard to emulate everything around him and find his own true voice...
